This fabulous Railway Companion was created due to the rise in travel by rail in the second half of the 19thC with the need to occupy your time on a long journey & so it opened up a new market for makers of travel and luxury goods.

It’s quite ingenious with the glass stirrup cup also acting as a stopper for the decanter which not only saved space but also meant a drink could be poured without having to hold or find somewhere to put the stopper whilst doing so.

The case has a divider to separate the decanter from the sandwich tin which has a hinged lid to the short side. This one was made by Seabrook, 'The Original Trunk Makers, Corner of St. Pauls, London' and has ‘Railway Companion' stamped to the top of the case in gilt.

A superb 19thC set by a good maker with a good patina & signs of wear commensurate with its age & use. (No chips or cracks)
