Amazing 19thC Napoleonic Prisoner of War Carved Bone 3 Masted 36 Gun Frigate (c.1800-10)
This unbelievable scratch built model, made from cow or sheep bone is in great condition with a few minor imperfections commensurate with its age.
It comes from “The Eyres Collection of French Napoleonic Prisoner of War Works of Art and Antique Weapons”, assembled over many years by a Devon collector.
The actual ship measures W:36cm x H:30cm x D:18cm and is incredibly detailed with masses
of rigging, blocks etc and has a swinging launch to the stern. It’s well presented on a 19thC ebonised base and mounted on later brass stands.
It has a Union Flag to the Fore peak and so could be a Flora Class Royal Navy Frigate.
The Flora class frigates were 36 gun sailing frigates of the fifth rate produced for the Royal Navy. They were designed in 1778 by Sir John Williams in response to an Admiralty decision to discontinue 32-gun, 12-pounder vessels. Williams proposed a frigate with a main battery of twenty-six 18-pound guns and a secondary armament of ten 6 pounders. Four 18-pounder carronades and 12 swivel guns were added to the upperworks in September 1799 and the 6-pound long guns were upgraded to 9-pounders in April 1780, before any of the ships were completed.
This really is as good as it looks and very much sought after and I am so pleased to have it in the shop on display for customers to view.
