Amazing Royal Navy Officers (Lt T. Le.B Pirouet RNR) Telescope by Ross & Gieves (c.1915)
Lt Theophile Le Blancq Pirouet RNR (b.1895) from St Helier, Jersey, joined the Royal Navy in 1915 and 1st served on HMS Arlanza.
Arlanza was originally an Ocean Liner owned by the Steam Packet Co, but was requisitioned in 1915 along with her sister ships to become Armed Merchant Cruisers for the war effort. She resumed her civilian career in 1920 and was finally scrapped 1938.
Pirouet, after serving on various other ships including HMS Venomous in 1943, he retired as a Lt CD-R and was also awarded the 1914-15 Star for his endeavours during WW1.
This working single draw nickel plated Officer of the Watch Telescope, was made by Ross of London (No 59174) and retailed by the famous Naval Outfitters “Gieves Matthew’s & Seagrove Ltd” of London, Portsmouth & Devonport.
These details date the telescope pre 1918 as the company changed their name after WW1 to “Gieves Ltd”. All these details, along with the officers name, is engraved to the eye end of the telescope. The barrel has been recovered in twine (not unusual) and has its original lens cap and sliding eye piece cover.
