Amazing WW1 era RFC Handley Page Bomber Propeller Boss Clock (c.1915-19)
The Handley Page Type O was a biplane bomber used by Britain during the Great War and at the time, the largest aircraft in the world.
The
aircraft were flown by the brave aircrew of the Royal Flying Corp (pre-RAF), predominantly in France for tactical night attacks on targets in German-occupied France and Belgium and for strategic bombing of industrial and transport targets in the Rhineland. Some aircraft were temporarily diverted to anti-submarine reconnaissance and bombing in the Tees estuary in 1917 and two aircraft operated in the eastern Mediterranean.
This wonderful piece of aviation history is the remnants of one of the four bladed propellers fitted to the two 250HP Rolls-Royce Eagle engines. It’s fitted with a working Smiths of Crinklewood mechanical timepiece, which marries well with the boss of the prop and keeps good time. (13”H x 3.25”D x 19”W)
