Find of the week, thanks to my friends at Bogey Knights, is this…….
Genuine Royal Navy HMS Kent Large Ships Funnel Badge (c.1997)
HMS Kent is a Type 23 Duke class frigate of the RN, commissioned in 2000 and the 1st ship to enter Royal Navy service in the 21st century and also the first Royal Navy warship with a female Executive Officer, Lt Cdr Vanessa Jane Spiller.
The
ship is still in service and has had a busy life up until now, having several deployments to the Persian Gulf to help in efforts against smugglers, pirates, terrorists and also in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. She was also deployed to the Horn of Africa on anti-piracy and anti-drug missions and visited Chattogram, Bangladesh as part of celebrations of 50 years of Bangladeshi independence amongst other tasks.
The 170 x 120cm Aluminium painted funnel badge is in fine fettle with some flaking and scratches commensurate with its age and use.
This was possibly removed in 2008 when the ship went in for a dual engine refit and replaced with new ones. There would have been one on each side of the funnel, it depicts the official ships badge of a prancing horse with the ships motto “INVICTA” (Unconquered) to the base within a blue scroll and the edges have a series of drilled holes for mounting with the reverse remaining blank.
Can’t say I’ve ever seen one of these on offer anywhere, so it’s a rare beast!
