Absolutely gorgeous mid 19thC Gilt Crested Mirror with twin arm candle sconces by Thomas Ponsonby of London (c.1850)
Thomas Ponsonby was appointed carver and gilder to King George IV in 1823, the warrant was renewed in 1830 at the accession of William IV, He was listed in the 1821 Post Office London directory as ‘British-plate-glass-warehouse, and Carver and Gilder to H.R.H. the Duchess of Gloucester’, and in 1824 additionally by appointment to ‘His Majesty’ and to Princess Augusta and Princess Sophia of Gloucester. In 1837 he and his son William were reappointed as carvers and gilders to Queen Victoria
This particular 90x70cm mirror which is marked to rear with the makers name and premises is in very fine fettle indeed. Apart from the odd cracking to the decorative parts of the gilt frame its in great condition, it’s almost totally original including the gilt paint. The glass has a little foxing commensurate with its age and the only change is a Edwardian upgrade from candle to Electric lights (which may need rewiring but works fine)
These are few and far between and would of originally come from a Royal or Upper class 19thC estate.
