Large Royal Navy T Class Submarine Sonar Room Bulkhead Clock (c.1950-60) by Smith Astral.
The Royal Navy's T class of diesel-electric submarines was designed in the 1930s to replace the O, P, and R classes. Fifty-three boats of the class were built just before and during the Second World War, where they played a major role in the Royal Navy's submarine operations. Four boats in service with the Royal Netherlands Navy were known as the Zwaardvisch
class.
In addition five T class submarines were modified significantly. Tireless, Token and the Barrow-built Tapir, Talent and Teredo were streamlined and fitted with improved battery cells, modern sonar and a fin-shaped conning tower and served the RN up until 1970 with one, HMS Tabard permanently moored at HMS Dolphin as a training boat until 1974.
The solid brass clock is in fine working condition with bags of patina and some minor wear commensurate with its age & use.
I believe this is possibly off one of the 5 streamlined subs of the 1950’s, due to the upgrade of a modern sonar. (It also could easily be off one of the Dutch boats)
The 8” clock face with its inverted chapter ring (seconds on the outside) is in excellent condition and the clock works perfectly keeping very accurate time. The seconds are on the outer rim so that it was easier to see when marking time whilst plotting or counting reverberations on the sonar for ranging a target. (Amongst other reasons)
The solid oak stand measures 11” x 11” x 12”H and has a verso to the rear with the original winding key hanging on a hook.
Great piece of Royal Naval memorabilia!
