King Edward VIII Royal Navy 1827 Pattern Officers Ceremonial Sword (c.1936)

The rarity of this Royal Navy Sword is obviously because, King Edward VIII was only on the throne from January of 1936 until his abdication in December of the same year.
The sword itself is in fine fettle and was first created in 1805, its elegant but impractical design being superseded by a solid-hilt design developed in 1827. In 1846, a blade was standardised for all Royal Navy Officers with the current light, single-edged straight blade being adopted in 1929 and is carried by all RN Commissioned Officers.
This regulation sword features a brass hilt with fouled anchor, white wire bound grip, which has been renewed at some stage in its life, and a brass pommel in the form of a lion.
The RN sword incorporates a unique mechanism that often proved a life-saver, as the inner side of the guard is hinged so that it can be folded down to engage with a pin on the scabbard top mount.
The hinged guard fold down on this particular sword, is engraved with its original owners name “V.A Cawley R.N”, whose first ship was HMS Bulldog as a gunnery officer in July of 1936 and he is also found as a Lieutenant on the Norfolk in 1941.
The blade has some marks and minor pitting commensurate with its age and is extremely well decorated, which includes the ER VIII Cypher. The leather scabbard is in fine fettle with no issues and benefits from a recent polish.
This will fly out if the shop at this price so don’t dally!
