Amazing Gilt Framed Royal Navy Sailors Journal Painting of HMS Atalanta (c.1880).

This 27 x 23cm framed painting, taken from a 19thC RN sailors journal (amongst others) is of a 26 Gun Spartan Class 6th Rate Frigate of the Royal Navy.
She was initially named HMS Juno when launched in 1844, and subsequently renamed Atalanta in 1878, in 1880 she was reported lost at sea this caused quite a stir internationally at the time and after much searching nothing was found with 281 lives lost, a memorial for this disaster can be seen in St Anns Church Portsmouth.
Among the crew that went missing was a young Lt P. Fisher who was the younger brother of Lord Jacky Fisher, Admiral of the Fleet.
During the 1960’s, her wreck was supposedly discovered in the infamous area known as the “Bermuda Triangle”
