Stunning Original Gilt Framed Royal Navy Watercolour Painting by Charles Taylor (c.1850)
Charles Taylor (act.1836-1871) was a famous British marine artist of the 19thC, as was his son Charles Taylor Jnr.
This
fabulous watercolour on paper is in fine fettle with the odd minor imperfection commensurate with its age.
It depicts a Royal Navy Squadron tacking in formation, comprising of a single three decker, accompanied by 7 two decker ships of the line. It has been settled on board, to preserve its integrity and is presented in it’s original gilt frame behind glass. The frame which measures 43” x 26”, has some minor moulding loses and has the artist’s name stenciled under the painting.
To the rear, are the original boards with auction chalk marks and a verso by Christie’s Auction House in London (Catalog page, Lot 139, dated 1969)
This truly is a fabulous mid 19thC piece of fine art and would make a great asset to any collection.
