Beautifully Crafted Victorian Lieutenants Court Sword & Scabbard c.1890 By Army & Navy, London.
This is wonderful straight double edged sword with acid etched decoration is in fine fettle, with just a few slight imperfections & wear to the leather scabbard. It’s made & marked by the Army & Navy Cooperative Co of Victoria St London.
The Army & Navy Co-operative Society Ltd. was incorporated on 15 September 1871, being formed by a group of army and navy officers. The aim of the
military co-operative was to supply goods to its members at the lowest remunerative rates, and was based on two earlier models – the Civil Service Supply Association and the Civil Service Co-operative Society. The society leased part of a distillery premises in Victoria Street, London which was owned by Vickers & Co, and by February 1872 a store for the sale of groceries was opened on the site. By 1873, the store offered stationery, drapery, fancy goods, tailoring, groceries, a chemist and even a guns & sword department.
This particular one measures 38” long and has a solid brass crown hilt with copper wire grip, it has a V.R (Victoria Regina) Cipher to the clamshell crossguard and brass features to the original scabbard. It has been freshly polished and is ready to fit into any military collection.
