Vintage Original Copper/Brass Royal Navy Rum or Spirit Pumps
Commonly referred to as a 'rum pump', the Royal Navy 'spirit pump' changed little from the start of the photographic record, to the cessation of the rum issue in 1970. (Black tot day)
Each
one measures 41” H including the handle and the copper is tin lined to prevent a metallic taste to the rum, both come with the brass rod and valve and a beech handle. The spout is seamed and brazed and also brazed to fix it to the bowl. There are no marks to one of them but vocabulary numbers were not stamped to pumps until the 1950’s but the other has the number 53598 stamped below the outer lip of the bowl.
These are becoming quite rare as most were buried at sea on Black Tot Day, 31st July 1970.
