1920’s Royal Navy Ceremonial Officers Gold Braided Bicorne Hat & Dress (Lt J. De. F Jago RN)
John De Filek Jago (1908-1984) was born in Johannesburg, later moving to Cambridge & studying at the Nautical College at Pangbourne, enlisting in the Royal Navy in 1923.
From
his service record, he was a pilot (Lt-CD-R) with the Fleet Air Arm and was based at RNAS Daedalus but is attached to the Royal Air Force as a Flight Lieutenant in 1939 and later in 1941 at HMS Grebe (RN Air Station, Dekheila, nr Alexandria, Egypt).
In March of 1941 he was shot down & captured with Lt. John A. Caldecott-Smith RN, after a night attack on Valona Harbour. Subsequently he became a POW in Italian & German captivity (c. 1942/43 Campo 5 at Gavi, finally at Marlag und Milag Nord), until his release in May 1945.
He eventually retired in March 1958 at the rank of Honourable Captain.
This fabulous set of RN Officers ceremonial dress is in fine fettle and consists of the metal case, moleskin Bicorne Hat, epaulettes and gold braided rope & tassels, all marked with the makers name “Gieves Ltd of 21 Old Bond St, London”. The red velvet lined tin is hand painted with the officers name and has a postage label to the front.
(The bicorne was widely worn until World War I as part of the full dress of officers of most of the world's navies. It survived to a more limited extent between the wars for wear by officers in the British, French, US & Japanese navies until World War II)
