Early Victorian Lofthouse & Saltmer of Hull Mahogany Apothecary Cabinet & Original Contents (c.1860’s)
In 1802, John Lofthouse established a druggists business at 12 Market Place, Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire and was joined in partnership by James Saltmer in 1863, with the business styled as Lofthouse & Saltmer thereafter.
The
solid mahogany cabinet is an absolute treasure chest of original apothecary items and tincture bottles, which include “Dr Gregory’s Powder, Laudanum Poison, Tinct’ Turkey Rhubarb, Aether, Camphorated Spirit of Opodeldoc, Parogoric Element & Citrate of Magnesia to name a few. It also includes various pieces of etched Victorian glassware including poison bottles, mixing slate, pill drawers with bone handles, medicine book dated 1866 and a variety of other medical paraphernalia.
The cabinet measures 13”H x 11”W x 9”D and has a locking lid which when closed, locks the front and rear doors. Unfortunately the key is missing but I’ll go through my bag of spares to see if I can find one. (No promises)
